A surprise winner Honorary Palme d’Or in the middle of the presentation of “Top Gun: Maverick” at the Palais des Festivals, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV returned to the red carpet in Cannes in 2025 with what is supposed to be the conclusion of a saga that changed his life. “Mission: Impossible” grossed fortunes and may have another rich career on the big screen with the arrival of his swan song: “The Final Reckoning”. METROPOLIS was at France’s busiest seaside resort to witness the warm reception given to the film. It is part of a cinephile brand derived from a CBS series that aired from 1966 to 1973. It offered a brilliant reworking of the codes of spy narratives. It was the Cold War, between the 1950s and 1980s, that transformed the sometimes “unofficial” craft of espionage into a pop-influenced film genre, whether through superhero-style soundtracks (as in “007”) or existentialist paths (the Oscar-winning “The Lives of Others” or the 1974 Palme d’Or winner “The Conversation”). This series has always explored the exploits of invisible people who infiltrate spaces where they arrive as parasites. Parasitism is a feeling long since overcome by Ethan Hunt, a master of disguise played by Tom Cruise for 29 years. He can’t protect those around him as he wants to while trying to keep the world safe. Given the partnership between the star and filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, Hunt exits the scene (for the time being) with a grandiose flourish. This month’s edition explores his magnificence through a chronological journey of Mission Impossible saga and his diverse experiences. You can also find a fantastic lineup of reviews and interviews waiting for you in this edition.
